Adult male with mumps
The events in this story take place in the late 1960s, before mumps vaccine. Following the birth of his first child, Andy (not his real name) was a very proud father. He and his wife planned for their next child in about 2 to 3 years. Andy narrated his experience as being exposed to mumps disease "somewhere, from somebody." He may not have known from whom he acquired the virus, but he certainly knew its effects on him. He was no doubt exaggerating when he said he had to transport his testicles in a wheelbarrow in front of him. However, his analogy to having a cargo large enough to use a wheelbarrow certainly left a lasting impression on anyone who heard his account of the possbile effects of mumps on an adult male. Andy and his wife did not have any more children. He was left sterile.
