A complete ICU patient - with chickenpox

I support immunization because when I was working in an Intensive Care Unit a 20 year old man was admitted - a complete ventilated and tubed patient. After several days he was diagnosed with chickenpox which had spread internally - the pox were on his lungs.

He did survive, and a year later he had permanently reduced pulmonary function.

He's lucky that he made it out alive and that reduced lung function was his only lasting complication! Varicella is a deadly disease in adults, as you witnessed first hand!

Wow, I did not know varicella could occur on your lungs! I think if more people knew this they would be more apt to vaccinate and less apt to participate in 'chicken pox parties'. That is scary!
