Working on a polio project in Kenya

In 2009, I spent time in Kenya working on a polio project. It made me appreciate immunization and how our public health system in Canada delivers vaccines.

There were several children in remote parts of Kenya with polio, some potentially with permanent weakness and damage. Govrenment or NGO services that vaccinate are sparse and seldom reach the remote tribes. During our project, when a local worker walked ahead of us announcing the vaccine, mothers came running to us with babies in their arms. They knew the importance and value of protecting their children.

Interesting how the mothers in countries where these diseases were recently prevalent come running to protect their children! You're right: they saw the value in preventing disease.
